Good model
«

October 06, 2007, 10:51:41 AM »
I've been looking at the OQO models and have a budget to work with. The only other UMPC I've been looking at is the Fujitsu U810. I do lean toward the OQO but, Most of the models are out of my range. That is, with the exception of the Good model (1.2GHz, 512MB Ram, 40GBHDD Windows XP Home edition). Does anyone currently have this model? If so, how does it work out for you? I know it doesn't support pen input but, I have a copy of other OSes that do support it. I'm sure the drivers are readily available once I install the other OS so, I'm not worried about that. Performance wise though what am I looking at? Is it worth the money? I won't be ordering until sometime around Jan or Feb so, prices may be completely different by then but, as it stands now, this is what I have to work with. Any advice?

We'd love to have you as a customer, but please be cautious - the good model you refer to does not have tablet hardware (the screen is not an active digitizer).
Sorry!

Ah, Well that certainly changes things as I definitely need the pen input. Going to have to think about this now, although hahaha, you can't beat having the CEO giving you advice on the matter. I've got some time before things happen so, hopefully things will work out with the OQO. Try as I may, I can't get the Fujitsu CEO to return my messages...go figure.

In the $1200 range you can take a look at the Sony UX's, they are probabky the most direct competitor of the OQO.

Wow, I thought the Sony UXs were much more expensive than that. Found the 280 for right around what you were saying. Realistically, it's probably best for me. Thing is though, there's really just something more appealing about the OQO. I can't put my finger on it but it's there (I'm sure everyone here understands that). Conversely, with the Sony, it seems like there's just something hokey about it. Something kind of gimicky and toy like about it. It's an intangible but it's every bit as important as any other spec in my opinion. I feel a bit silly about obsessing about it but, I'd hate to have buyers remorse with such a large investment. Plus if I get it wrong, the wife won't go for spending anymore to make it right.

Oh, I think we all know what you mean. The OQO has a great design that just makes everyone fawn over it. It truly does deserve the title of the sexiest UMPC.
psst, Amazon also lists the 380 at $1200:

Well, thanks for finding that for me. I'm usually drawn to Sony products so it's possible that fate is drawing me to the UX. Even if I go that route, I'll always have OQO envy
Hopefully in the time between now and my purchase I will get off the fence and make up my mind.

Mr Moore I thought all models had active screens but only versions sold with XP Tablet came with a pen to use it. All could purchase a pen if they wanted to use this feature.

I have a UX 380N or sale for 1300$, if you would like to buy it. It has hardly been used, since I got a Best oqo with a bunch of accessories for a gift after I bought. It still has all the original packaging, and is in great condition. It comes with a dock ($200 value) and all included accessories. I am also including a LG lightscribe DVD rw/rw+/CD combo ($120, included free.) that is bootable. No bumps, scratches, or dings. Post here if interested.

As long as it's still available in Jan/Feb everything should work out...thanks!

Dennis,
The Good is an active digitizer. BUt it has xp not tablet edition so no TIP and must buy pen separately
We have received a lot of feedback from people that want an OQO at the lowest possible entry price. Tablet features are very popular with a subset of our customers and prospects (around 10-15% of all laptop buyers would like an active digitizer if it were not an expensive extra cost item). For others, they may want the most basic operating system (or no operating system at all) and limited features because of their intended usage model (e.g. a student user, or a quality inspector in a factory).
To shave some cost off our entry level product while still offering tablet features to customers who want them,
we no longer offer the hardware for the active digitizer in the good model
. This saved us some cost (along with lower prices for some components, price drops due to our volume, and other design improvements) -- and we were able to drop the price of the good model substantially.
The
better and best models still offer active digitizers
, and this is a popular feature at the higher end. In fact, the better model is close in price to the original OQO model 02 good model while offering a much faster CPU and much larger hard disk drive (and of course the active digitizer).
Please do not buy the good model with the assumption that you can buy a pen and have tablet functionality -- this is not the case with the new model 02.
Thanks for being our customer!

Don't buy the Sony. It's not that its bad...its not. I had the same consideration and while I ended up with a higher end OQO...Smartest decision I made. I putz with it all the time. Changing settings, using the pen, etc. Just a terrific model. Its worth the expense and customer service for returns (should it need repair) is superior. Just my $.02.

I think the sony is your best choice if you really need a faster processor. The latest UX has a 1.2 Ghz Core Solo. The older ones with the Pentium M are also faster than the OQO 02. There's also the Flipstart if you need more raw CPU performance than the OQO 02 (although you're limited on RAM).
