Hello Everyone,

I've had some success getting Gutsy running on the Model 02 and I thought I should share with the community.

For several reasons I decided to build a new kernel.  Foremost among these are the bus errors caused by the wired ethernet driver.  They can be fixed pretty easily. The correct driver is rtl8139too and the bus errors can be prevented by choosing the the "Use PIO instead of MMIO" option.  (The symbol is called 8139TOO_PIO in your .config.)

By compiling the options I need to boot directly in, not as modules, I am able shave over a minute off the boot time.  There is no need for an initrd if you build in the ide-generic and vga drivers.

You might also want to turn on Low-Latency Preemption and the Tickless System (Dynamic Ticks) options.  They seem to make things a bit more responsive and not wake up the processor quite so often.  Building specifically for C7 doesn't seem to do much but can't hurt either.

Once you've got a new kernel installed, compiling and installing the latest madwifi atheros drivers from source works without a hitch.

The dialing scripts for Sprint, given in the Unofficial Howto nearly work.  Only two changes need to be made:
Remove the "ppp" line.  For some reason this causes ioctl errors from tcgetattr.
Also add a line like this: "user xxxxxxxxxx@vzw3g.com" where the "xxxxxxxxxx" is replaced by your phone number.

I'm still having a couple of frustrating problems though.

The bios will let me enable either the WiFi or the EVDO but not both at once.  Windows knows how to turn off one and enable the other.  I'd like to be able to do the same from linux.

Also, the HAL finds 2 different power buttons, one labeled FF and one labeled CM.  I suspect that when I press the power button on the side of the unit, HAL is not passing the event on to gnome power manager because it comes from the wrong button.

Finally, for some strange reason, the gnome power manager doesn't know that it can shut the system down even though gnome-power-cmd.sh works just fine.  No "Shutdown" button shows up when select the Quit option in gnome..  Not a big deal. Pretty weird though.

If anyone has had any success with those issues, please let me know and as I get more stuff working, I'll update this thread.
