I live in Italy and I am a big fun of OQO. I would like to buy the Model e2, 1,6GHz, 1GB,32GB SSD, XP Tablet with HSDPA. I contacted Expansys and apparently the SSD XP Tablet version is available only without HSDPA. Why? Can you help me?

regards

Is this not what you're after...
http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=159671

In case that link doesn't work the expansys product code is 159671.

I've asked both Expansys and OQO themselves and both told me that they don't ship a unit in this configuration.

I want the tablet functions but I'm not convinced by Vista (and I know that XP Tablet 2005 works perfectly on my TC1100).  Vista contains tablet features but XP Pro does not of course.

I've been keeping an eye on the OQO for a while and the addition of both SSD memory and (crucial for mobiles in Europe) HSDPA were the things that tipped me over the edge.  Imagine my disappointment to find I can't get tablet functions without Vista.  If only...  Undecided

ahh Tablet, somehow I missed that bit, brain only registered the XP part.

From my experience with Vista on an e2 it isn't too bad at all.  I'm told the handwriting recognition is better than that of XP tablet, all I can say is that I'm very impressed with both it's accuracy and ability to cope with my handwriting.

@bucklands, do you use OneNote?  I'm not worried about handwriting recognition as I keep nearly all of my notes in handwriting form anyway.  Is Vista really responsive enough on the e2, I can't be waiting around for the OS when I want to jot down a quick note or thought.  Any comments?

I'm not the biggest user of Onenote on this forums, I've only been using it since I got the e2.  I've begun using more and more though.  I spent an hour using it solidly on the train today and found it to be quite responsive.  I have run through some basic tuning listed on this forum and Dennis Moore's blog.

The only slightly negative thing I can say is that the small screen size does limit quite how productive you can be in OneNote.  That's the compromise for the portability and pocketability though.  I need to learn to write smaller and neater Smiley

@bucklands, thanks for your reply; very helpful.

I use OneNote extensively on an HP tablet and a laptop (actually a MacBook Pro with Parallels installed just so I can run OneNote there as well) and sync my notebooks back to a server.

I envisage that an OQO would allow me to add quick notes and actions when I'm out of the office etc. and they would be sync'd to my other machines as well.  Of course, I'd also be able to carry the couple of thousand pages I already have in OneNote with me.

Thanks also for the pointer re optimizing Vista on the OQO.

Whilst I can really see this being useful for me, previous bad experience with Vista is making me hold back from what would be a $3,000 purchase though.

Dennis Moore, OQO CEO, suggested me to post this on OQOTALK.COM (https://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=4763311972930494628&postID=1588199365882956019), lets see if someone at OQO can help us to spend our 3'000 euro budget :-)

You may want to check Dynamism for the HSDPA e2.  They have excellent service and all my interactions have been positive.  On top of the good service, they have a free standard battery and executive case with purchase right now.

As far as I know, Dynamism UK sells ONLY to the UK. For other international orders, people need to order from Dynamism USA which is pretty inconvenient because you need to pay customs and VAT if you're unlucky (depending on the country). In Germany for example, I need to pay an additional 19% VAT for each and every Dynamism USA order, one reason I don't order from them anymore, even if they finally started to accept my german Amex credit card. I have to agree though that the buying experience with Dynamism has always been excellent, especially the pre-buying contact by eMail.

Folks --

As you know, I am a huge Vista fan.  For the record, I only use Vista on my PCs at home and at work.  I love it.  The security and power management are superb.  However, I realize that many customers are not yet ready for the shift just yet.

I think there might be a way to get XP Tablet and the ability to switch to Vista when you are ready - buy your OQO with Vista Ultimate, and contact OQO Support to request an XP Tablet restore DVD.  I believe this will work - MS is offering the right to downgrade to XP for legal Vista owners.  Can someone here who has Vista contact OQO Support to confirm that this works?

I don't know how long MS will allow this downgrade right.  I hope this helps, Andrea and others.

Thanks for being (or considering becoming) our customer!

Thanks Dennis for your suggestion but I don't feel expert enough to install XP Tablet by myself

Could you tell me why OQO sells in USA a version of Model 02 with SSD, XP Tablet and EV-DO while here in Europe Model e2 with SSD and XP Tablet is available only WITHOUT HSDPA?!

Isn't that a nonsense?!

Another question: when the sunlight optimized display will be available in Europe?

thanks again for taking your time to answer

Dennis,

Thanks for the suggestion re XP Tablet restore DVD.

I went ahead and bought a unit from Expansys with Vista Business but really wanted XP Tablet so I will give this a try.  Overall, I am impressed with the device but still not keen on Vista.

Great that you're a Vista fan, I'm a Vista fan too. So when do we get a 2GB RAM OQO e2 instead of having to deal with downgrades to Windows XP Tablet?  Wink
The OQO e2 has great potential but 1GB RAM, the lame CPU/GPU combo and the small 32GB SSD aren't really crowd pleasers. You took care of the small SSD size and I agree that the sunlight display surely is an improvement too but I'm still waiting for another Gig of RAM and maybe a more decent CPU/GPU combo.

I would gladly pay 3000 Euro for a unit with 64GB SSD, 2GB RAM, sunlight display, HSDPA and a decent iTunes video playback performance. I also wouldn't mind if OQO would switch WLan hardware from Atheros to the latest Intel 4965 ABN which delivers impressive performance figures, especially regarding range. Adding a better WWAN/WLan antenna wouldn't hurt either.

Now I shut up, I don't want to repeat myself over and over again.
A last thing though: if you're capable of squeezing a Core Duo processor into that tiny OQO e2, I add another 500 Euro to it. Wink
