Ordinary Display and Sunlight Optimized Display?

Hi all,
I was wondering if someone could please explain the technological differences between the ordinary 02 displays and the new sunlight optimized displays? How can we tell which one we have?
Thanks,
Stu

Stu, I cannot explain it technically as I haven't got a clue. I do have two OQOs here right now, one with and without the new display. The normal display is beautiful, but outside turns into a mirror. To its credit though, you can usually angle it a bit and see it (unlike my x61 which is impossible to see ever)
The new outdoor display is well... not perfect, but it is quite good. Outdoor visibility is pretty good, even a bit better than my outdoor display LS800. It is very usable, but you do need to crank up the brightness a bit, overall a thumbs up.
Inside though, next to the older 02 with standard screen, its maybe a bit less good. The standard screen is just rich, contrasty and gorgeous, top of the class. The outdoor display next to it is slightly less rich in color, and appears a bit more grainy. It is still very good, so don't lose sleep over it. Both are very good, ranging from excellent to amazing so you can't go wrong with either. I work from all over the place, and in the summer and fall I tend to take my office to be at the base of a tree somewhere. For me, the outdoor screen is essential.

I picked this up from one of sales info sites:
• Anti-Reflective (AR) film coating applied to inside of LCD to reduce mirror like
reflection or glare from direct sunlight
• 50% reduction in specular reflection – unmatched outdoor readability compared
to other UMPC and tablet competitors
• Ideal for those who work in bright light/outdoor environments e.g. field service
and inspection (CSX track inspectors)
• Tests with 5040 lux incident exhibit the following specular reflection results:
– Motion Computing: 2466 nits (nits is a measure of specular reflection ONLY)
– M02 production: 480 nits (lower nits is less specular reflection, and is BETTER)
– Motion Computing outdoor readable: 356 nits
– M02 + Sunlight Optimized display: 250 nits

Can someone share how well the Sunlight Optimized Display works as an Active Digitizer, compared to the regular display.
I'm not sure if there is suppose to be any difference but I did notice from the OQO (US) shopping website that it will drop the Windows XP Tablet option once you select the Sunlight Optimized Display for the 32GB SSD model, or if you select the 64GB SSD model (bundled with the Sunlight Optimized Display).
Since Vista will also support pen, I believe this is just another example of OQO refusing to bundle Windows XP Tablet (
http://www.oqotalk.com/index.php/topic,1620.0.html
) and not so much that choosing the Sunlight Optimized Display will mean you forgo pen computing altogether, right?! Thanks.

I don't think OQO would be refusing to bundle XP Tablet with the new screen models as they still seem very committed to XP along with Vista.

UPDATE: I noticed on the other post Dennis stated that if customers purchase a Windows Vista Ultimate edition and want the XP Tablet then they can contact OQO who will send them out a XP Tablet Restore Disc.

Stu, if you have a chance to access the OQO US order site (use a US Proxy if you are international like me), you'd see what I mean. Like someone who discovered on the other thread, there is no way to place an order for a Sunlight Optimized Display running Windows XP Tablet.
I agree that OQO has been more commited to XP than others, for which I am personally grateful. However, it really seems like OQO is not bothering with Windows XP Tablet any more.
FWIW, Dennis didn't sound all that confident that OQO support would provide you the Windows XP Tablet recovery disc... but he's the CEO so I suppose you could just print out that forum post with your order? On that note, anyone who needs a model e2 Windows XP Tablet recovery disc can send me a PM and US$50 to my PayPal account.

I went to the Expansys site the other day looking for an OQO with the outdoor screen but they only seem to have them for sale with the SSD at a ridiculous price. If the upgrade program was for a change to the outdoor screen I would certainly consider it.

I have both .... a 60gb 02 for one year and a 60gbSSD O2 E2 for 10 days...
I didn't noticed any major difference between both OQO screens ..
But with SSD and 100mhz more .. I get 22000 points with crystalmark and only 15000 with the old one... and that's a huge difference for an every day use.. plus a big difference with the battery ...
and now the normal battery is very usable 2h to 3h for web surfing before it was 1h30 to 1h45.... but much to slow and mouse pointer was moving alone 70% of the time
... it never appends now ...
And the double battery is between 5 to 7 hours (3hours a show based on Excel + infocus video prejector + a 1h30 Divx in the TGV and more than 1h battery was left for surfing or mp3)
I have no use of internal HSDPA ... I really prefer a BT connection + HTC Dual touch real phone in Internet sharing function...
The OQO E2 is amazing.. areally usable PC .. Wifi is perfect and screen with F11 Crtl++ makes internet surfing a real competitors to new eee and so on ...
Price is expensive but, no other PC can be usable (powerful enough and 3 hours useable surfing, Divx, excel) at 450g
OQO E2 is the best machine ...

Newworld666,
Can you clarify what you mean when you said,

.... but much to slow and mouse pointer was moving alone 70% of the time

Also, do you have any video stuttering or slowness when playing videos, streaming or from the SSD hard drive that other people have reported?

With the old OQO .. very often ... the pointer is going slowly down ....
as if falling down
.... for one or two seconds when the proc is overloaded ... that is really annoying .... particularly for double click... so I wait for a second ou two ... and then it's OK...
with the OQO E2 ... wich I installed 100% similar (nearly a clone disc) ... it doesn't happen at all
Anyway at the moment I am reinstalling the old OQO from the reinstallation disc... and calculate every again (crytalmark) I am going to make a post with comparison Crystalmark between the two OQO with and without optimizations... both under vista... 100% better than XP ...
