One of my extended batteries and the only one that still "rattled" has apparently come to the end of its time here on earth,  :'(or so I am told by OQO support.

Bought obviously more than the limited 6 months warranty given for this expensive battery, I was told by support there was nothing I could do with it now that it has developed some kind of short inside, due I am sure to the excessive rattling it was plagued by its entire short life.

Poor little thing, disabled at birth!

I know the battery is not exhausted because I have several others and they all, have been replaced at one time or another during the rattling extended battery episode early when the product was introduced.  And I don't use them all that much since getting them.  Apparently if they are replaced and mine all have been they are replaced and then retain the original date of purchase and warranty.

This is the only one I never got around to replacing while under the limited warranty.  What really irks me is that I know this battery is still good and has some sort of short due to the shaking inside.  There is just no way it could have been used anywhere near the amount of time expected for this type of battery.

Since it was DOA and I could do nothing else with it, I decided to take a look inside.  Boy was I surprised!  It is, or was, remember this was one of the first ones that came out, was really put together in a rather crude way, with tape holding things together and very flimsy solder holding two lithium batteries together attached to a small circuit board where one see the led lights.   I would guess the standard battery has just one of these batteries inside, they were never rattlers.  Anyway, I could see that the solder on one of the two connectors had indeed come apart, and while I tried to see if I could reconnect it, I was not able to do so.  Perhaps the circuit board shorted out, but I don't have the proper testing equipment to test voltage and make any further certain determination on what is going on.

All I know is I'm out a battery and not a cheap one, and I said this would happen when I started yelling about the rattlers last year when they came out.  It's my own fault for not sending it in but none the less, I'm a little pissed.

AND no recycling service offered by OQO either!  Shocked

They should offer some way to do something environmentally friendly with our discarded and end of life cycle parts, at least some direction on where to deposit responsibly, no? Huh

I had to open my extended battery before and it does appear pretty fragile instead. As 3goldens said, it just 2 standard lithium cells held together by some flat soldering.
I didn't do it by choice but rather because one of the metal edges (near the SIM recess) popped out.  Although I don't suggest you do so, you can open one easily by prying around the edges, similar to how you would open an old iPod.
I wished I had taken a picture to share but I really didn't feel comfortable leaving it open. The first time I put it back together, the battery gauge no longer worked and I panicked. I re-opened it again and noticed that the battery guage switch was out of alignment. Nothing much is really holding it in place except for some molded plastic edges. It finally worked the second them I snapped the extended battery back together.
Morale of story: handle your extended batteries with care and go easy when pressing that battery guage. These things are more fragile than they appear.

I wonder if the heat produced by the OQO affects the soldering and other components of these batteries.

No man, it is the shake, rattle and roll, that affects them!

Why not mail it to me to try to fix it?  I've been soldering and voltmetering for many years.  Since it's under a pound the Priority Mail postage should be $4.60 each way.  My desire is in getting the learning experience without tearing apart my own good battery.

That's a good idea. I'm all for recycling and properly disposing of toxic materials. OQO will need to consider this otherwise they will come under the same scrutiny that Apple did of being non-environmentally friendly.

Stu

IT according to Apple and MS is not meant to be environmentally friendly. VISTA/Leopard = 4x4 /SUV to take a 4  year old child to school 2 miles along the road. If you want to be environmentally friendly think retro PC's and more importantly retro OS's and thin clients.

How about a linux kernal on the OQO running a thin client, with NT4 quad core server running a citrix server, that shoud be able to run a good few 100 clients on it. You would still get MS office something like XP version 2000. The total power usage per desktop would be a fraction of the standard VISTA model.

I would like to see a competition for the least power usage to run a full desktop environment for an office of 100 people. Now that would be saving the planet. I recon you could reduce the power usage by at least 60-70% and then take the Aircon cost of it as well.

does the putting the dead battery in the freezer for 3 days gimmick work?..i used  to laugh at this but i recently tot my ux battery was dead...out of desperation..chucked it into the meat freezer in a ziploc bag for 3 days..and 2 nervous days of charging nonstop...the green charging light appeared...yoh these batts are so exp like S&400+ here in singapore...

now after 2 wks the battery is charging & discharging with 2% wear....

Ummm... I guess no one on this thread has seen my thread dealing with re-building the battery packs.  (Atleast the 01/01+ series)

http://excalibur1.net/OQO01BatteryRebuild.htm

The conductive ribbon in these things is very fragile.  It doesn't take much to jarr the connections loose.  I replaced the ribbon with fine wire.

I have a web page showing photos and information on how to rebuild them. There is also information there on where to get new cells.

I would be happy to rebuild a dead battery pack for a small fee if anyone is interested.
