It is getting hot
«

The weather has finally warmed up (Oregon) and so is my OQO 02. It is MUCH warmer than 2 days ago when temperature was 70 (now it's 90). My OQO is locked to 400 MHz and it is still so hot. I wonder how you guys have been running this thing at 1.6 GHz?

I'm running just fine @ 1.6ghz here in NorCal (102 degrees today) It doesn't run much warmer or cooler than my HP Tablet or my Sony TZ around the CPU area.

I can attest to Oregon being hot right now (in portland anyway). 94 today... sheesh!

That's why I am using an external usb fan and why I would also recommend using one to anyone, who is afraid his OQO could burn some parts of it.

Hey nivenh and fixup, you guys are both in OR, just a short 90 minute drive away from each other. You could get together and code OQO system software ;-)
The solution to your problem is to move to AK
I think our all-time record high in Anchorage is 85, and today it's a sunny and cool 55. Can't say I miss the 115 temps when I was in Davis, CA.

What a small world, I lived and worked in UC Davis for more than 10 years. Programing is just one of my side interest. I wrote code mainly for my engineering projects and papers, most of them were done on Libretto -my UMPC for 10 years. Most of the codes are for real-time controling machines, so both efficient system level and easy user interface are involved. I still like the Libretto more than OQO, but its screen is dying so I bought an OQO. I'mgoing to buy another larger and cheaper UMPC like the HP 2133, because OQO is nice to be pocketable but it cannot be my only PC like the Libretto has been.
The problem is I believe OQO does not need any system-level software. I have been living without oqomanager.exe without missing anything. The only function that still requires it is brightness adjustment and I almost never adjust it, 5 bars is perfect. I don't even use the OQO PS/2 mouse driver. I don't have any issues ever since.

What model Libretto do you use Fixup? I love the Librettos. It's a pity Toshiba don't make them any more. Do you know if there are any plans to continue the Libretto models later in the future?

Do these make much of a difference? I would have thought that they would have caused more heat since the USB port has to pump power out to it. What one do you use?

I have had pretty much all the models: 50, 70 and 100. The 100, overclocked to 266MHz, have been my primary computer/laptop for the last 10 years.
Two or three years ago, Toshiba tried to sell a new Libretto but failed immediately. I bought one, it was a crap - hot, loud, bigger, heavier and sluggish, and of course I returned it.
Spoiled by the Libretto, it is very hard for me to accept these new UMPCs - hot, noisy (CPU fan), short-battery life and difficult to use (two large for thumbs and two small for touch-typing).
I'm putting my hope on the upcoming Atom-based ones like the M528 or MSI Wind. I've been saying it for years: mobile is not about how fast; it is about how cool, quiet and long run. Intel finally understood what I meant and is releasing a 800MHz CPU next month, that consumes 10x less power.
My OQO 02 (bought only 30 days) is on sale for $900 plus free shipping and free Verizon EVDO service.
