I was fortunate to be asked to present content during the Association of Language Companies Annual Conference in San Francisco last week and I took the opportunity to share my OQO with the conference attendees.

On Friday I was part of a four-person tech panel and we discussed different aspects of technology, how things have changed so much in such a short time, and how those technological changes have altered the language services industry for the better.  At the end of our presentation/panel discussion I pulled my OQO from the podium to show the audience that the OQO had been running the presentation the entire time and they were just amazed!  Interestingly I noticed that most of the audience questions came from women who were looking for more work/life balance especialy when they learned that the OQO has built-in LAN and WWAN (interesting market segment, no?).

Saturday morning I gave a presentation on the topic of Disaster Preparedness/Recovery and I used the OQO not only for my presentation, but also as an example of a tool to aid a business to stay connected during a disaster.  The presentation and the OQO were very well received.  I was actually late to a meeting because I was fielding questions on the OQO for 15 minutes after the session was over.

Immediately following my presentation I attended a board meeting where we used the OQO to present online content in a meeting room with no internet access - once again, the OQO saved the day!

It was a little embarrassing because everyone was assuming that I'm getting some kind of kick-back from OQO (no...not even a t-shirt!  Wink  ), but what they don't realize is how dedicated I am to the product.  The way I see it - when you find something like the OQO that changes the way you do business and allows you the flexibility to stay on top of your business while still attending to your family, then why not shout it from the roof-tops?

Oh yeah, I earned the new nickname of "Inspector Gadget" at the conference.    Cheesy

Nice, you're a walking OQO advertisement Smiley  It sure is an attention-getter!
I wonder if it will become passe when the raft of MID's comes out this summer.

Too true. Sounds like your presentations were very interesting. I'd be very interested in listening to them - are podcasts or recordings available?

Come on Dennis, the least you could do is to send Sandy a T-Shirt, black of course.
Here's are some suggestion for what you can put on it.
Start with a large OQO print, followed by some text like so:
OQO - what UMPCs want to be when they grow up
OQO - 1.6GHz, 1GB Ram, 120GB HD... 1 pound
OQO - yes, it runs Windows.... and Linux, and OSX (because it can)
OQO - size matters
OQO - Anytime, Anywhere* ,  *check your local ISP for coverage (tiny print)
OQO - stop staring at my 'O's!

No recordings of the proceedings this year, but we're looking into it for next year and I've been invited back to speak on this topic as a general session instead of a break-out.  I don't know how I got to be the expert on disaster recovery other than having survived through theft, earthquakes, extended power outages and more recently, a flood at our business - but we survived and still took care of our customers.

I wish I had had my OQO back then.

And some more:

OQO - It's not how big it is, it's what you can do with it.
OQO - Is that a PC in your pocket?
OQO - The stealth computer.
OQO - Yes it is. Yes it does. Yes it can. Really.

I hope OQO are taking note of these slogans - I reckon they'd make great T.V. adverts.

Ummm... Sandy, it sounds as though you've definitely had enough experience to be an expert on disaster recovery. What else do you think you need? lol. Personally I'd prefer not to have experienced any of those things.  Grin

(Dennis) - this would make a very good story to post on your blog.

(Sandy) - I'd be very interested to read your notes if you're happy with it. Could you e-mail them to me? It sounds like a very interesting topic.

Stu,

PM me your email address and I'd be happy to share.

I wish I had known half of the things then that I know now, but that's life right?

@Sandy -- I hear you stopped by OQO galactic headquarters not too long ago, but I missed seeing you.  I hope you enjoyed your visit!

Regarding disaster recovery, one of the use cases for which some of our customers have purchased or are considering purchase of OQO computers is for disaster situations -- command, control, communications during the relief efforts.

Thanks for being our customer!

Hi Dennis!!

Yes, I did get a chance to meet Jim from your team and he was kind enough to give me a tour.  You guys have a great space!!  Very funky, San Francisco style for sure.

Sorry I missed you and I hope to have the opportunity to catch you next time.  We have an upcoming trip to the bay area that is pending so I'll be sure to let you know ahead of time when I'll be in town.

Regarding using the OQO during a crisis/disaster, thankfully I haven't yet had the opportunity but I know that it will be an important tool for the future.  Keep up the great work and thank you for taking care of my OQO when I was having problems a couple of weeks ago.  I was so pleased to have it turned around in just a few days.

Best,
Sandy

I hope you realize how jealous I am Sandy - lol. Did you get a sneak peek at the 03 or any other cool upcoming hardware? I'm sure it exists and that OQO are just torturing us with the wait - lol.

Yes, I saw it all!  They walked me through R&D and then swore me to secrecy!! Wink

No - sorry, no word and actually I didn't really ask about the 03 except in passing.  I'm sure that whatever is in development, a customer on a tour is the last person they're going to show it off to!  Would have been nice, but not this time!  Their offices are really great.  Not your standard boring office space.  I can see how their engineers would be inspired to be more creative in that environment.  Everyone I met was very nice, especially Jim!  Smiley
