Just wondering if this is possible? i heard stories how the iphone 3g wont allow tethering. I wanna be able to use the 3g hsdpa funciton and gps  for my oqo that i recently just purchase. It's a awesome device!  If this is not possible then i have to go to htc touch diamond, but that's triband so that won't work for me either Sad im in canada by the way. Canada sucks.. lol

I very highly doubt you can tether the gps unless somebody writes an app that eg. broadcast GPS nmea data over bluetooth, it is definately do-able just, I dont think anyone has yet. with regards to blocked tethering, I just see that as another reason to not get an iPhone.

But I can believe it is true, as the iphone comes with unlimited data, even on networks that don't have unlimited data packages. Example, in the UK there is an operator called O2, they sell the iPhone but have never had an unlimited 3G data package available as an addition to their voice plans, so they would be very interested in barring that ability of the iPhone, especially seeing as the iphone has quite a reasonable tarrif and normally O2  try and charge £3 ($6) for every Megabyte you go over your allowance on what few limited data packages they have for voice plans.

But anyway that is what jail breaking and modified firmware is for.

At the moment Apple have made it so that it's not possible to tether the iPhone 3G with laptops, however, I'd imagine that someone will release a hack to this sometime in the near future or that Apple will offer it with a software update. If you can, hold off for a while and see what happens.

Well...the iPhone has unlimited data for your country of origin, but don't try to take a US iPhone to Europe and use it to surf online!!  You'll come home with a horrendously expensive bill!!

Yeah, roaming charges are ridiculous. I took my Treo to New Caledonia when I was there last and I only used it to check the mobile version of Yahoo mail which I checked probably three times a day. I ignored forwards and only downloaded Word attachments and uni PDFs. Anyway when I came back I'd spent about $100AU in data charges only.

Get a blackberry!

Otherwise the Treos will also do tethering over USB or Bluetooth.

To clarify.  If you buy this iphone with a service provider that gives you a couple of Gig of internet you cannot use the data on a computer you can only use it on the phone itself ?

For a modern phone it has a stupid feature.

When you mention Trio and blackberry why not also mention Nokia, LG, Motorola, Sony... Most modern mobiles can do tethering via BT and USB.  That feature has been aroung since GSM 2G days.

The iphone has just come to Australia but I would like to know from other international users what features, if any, are they still using on this spectacular phone...

I see phone features like the basic camera on a phone... for a lot of people its a must have feature.  Get the phone unboxed... use the camera to take pictures of the dog then never use it again.

Yep, that's correct.

I've only ever had tethering experience with the Treo so I'm not really sure what other cell phones offer.

lol - that's the only reason I bought the Treo - I liked the idea of having a camera. Cheesy

That reminds me, supposedly the advantage of a GSM phone is that you can swap out the SIM chip when traveling and use it with a chip from the local service provider.  But I believe the iPhone is locked so that you can't even swap chips within the US. Could this be yet another reason not to get an iPhone?  I'm loosing count of it's problems.  Let's see...
1-7) 7 iPhone dissapointments published by Forbes magazine.
  8 ) Can't use it with a GoPhone plan ($100/year vs. $90/mo in US).
  9) No Bluetooth Stereo.
10) Must put Apple Software on your PC. Why??
11) Can't swap out the SIM chip for travelling.
12) No Bluetooth tethering.

Been tethering every Nokia model I've owned since 1996.

The OQO could be the greatest smart phone (also probably the largest) in the world!!!! if they added a mic and a speaker on the sides of the screen, made it so the screen could be touched with fingers as well as digital pens, and added a button that let you swap in and out of windows mobile (or whatever phone ui they want to use) the same way the HTC shift did.

How is that not like.. the greatest idea theres ever been!?

I have no objection to adding cell phone cabability to the OQO but only if I can continue to use it as my one and only computer, which means running Windows Vista.  It seems that for people who are happy with a smart phone, and one or more computers to maintain and synchronize, well there are plenty of choices out there already.  Although I have no idea if this is possible, my idea for the ultimate OQO would involve leaving the OQO itself as it is with a Windows Experience index of 1.0, but then when plugged into the Blu-ray DVD docking station (capable of playing DRM'd movies over HDMI) it magically transforms itself into a desktop machine with a Windows Experience index of 5.9 (currently the highest possible with today's technology).
