I'm going to give Avira a go. I've been using Avast. Whilst on holiday I turned off the anti virus because I wasn't connected to the internet and the speed difference was a revelation. And I didn't have one freeze up either.

Well it looks like I opened up a can of worms here suggesting Avast. Very interesting to see it is not OQO friendly. I was always farily happy with AVG version 7.5 on other machines but it was the new version 8 with all the rubbish on that put me off. 7.5 always performed well and did not slow down machines to any signifcant dgreee.

Anyway I was rebuilding a laptop for a DJ the other day and I had istalled AVG 7.5 on it a year ago. I had disabled the AVG  as the machine was never connected to the internet and files were always transfered by USB disk from a trusted, scanned, source. Anyway I connected the laptop to the internet and got it to update the virus definitions and wow AVG updated them without updating the software.

So if any if you were happy with the old AVG but suffering under the new bloatware then.

1)  Delete AVG 8
2)  Dig out an old coverdisk from a PC mag and install the 7.5 version or click the link at the bottom of the page
3)  Run the update and only update virus definitions.

Hope this goes so way to redeem my previous bad advice.

I don't know if it's just me but I've been using AVG Free 8 for quite a while now and it appears to have gotten faster. Maybe an update fixed the speed issue. It's still slower than 7.5 but to me, it appears more usable (maybe I've just got used to it Huh). Is anyone else finding this? Huh

Apparently the new Norton 2009 is awesome, yes I know it's hard to believe that this thundering POS could become a "best of class", but apparently its true.

I wonder how it would run on the OQO. Is the required memory footprint smaller than 2008? Huh

Yes much smaller and faster, even more so than what I'm using now (nod32).

Thanks for that. I'll definitely consider upgrading from AVG to that. I've always liked Norton and use it on every business PC I set up. The family's Macs have always run Norton too. I read somewhere on here not to use the older version on the OQO which is why I'm yet to install it on mine.
