If OQO doesn't have an ATOM version or a radically new VIA version in the works, then I seriously wonder what they've been up to for the past two years.

OQO reminds me of Palm in the late 90s. They've got the best form factor out there (remember the early WinCE bricks?), but they're consistently delivering yesterday's technology tomorrow.

I look forward to the day that a top-tier manufacturer will produce a viable competitor to the OQO's form factor.

Assuming OQO is still contemplating both the Nano and Atom processors for their next OQO model, it might actually be a good way to put pricing pressure on Via by showcasing their existing OQO product with Intel Atom in a "technology demonstration".

Whatever they are cooking up at OQO I hope in the end it is faster, offers more memory and improves battery life over the current model. Cheers.  Tongue

It's getting noisy in here...

...I used to work at Intel.  [It] does not, in my opinion make for such a significant investment of time and intellectual capital that it logically follows that this is the OQO3...
I hope the end result is the OQO 2.5; I also hope that the Zero-Three arrives with the fastest and most efficient processor, whether it is Via, Intel, or someone else.

Intel thinks Atom is a match for Model X:

http://mobile.pcworld.com/htmlsite/html_article.php?id=1&CALL_URL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.pcworld.com%2Fbusinesscenter%2Farticle%2F150097%2Fintel_confirms_oqo_to_use_atom_in_handheld_pc.html

I am glad everyone is excited about a CPU. I could have sworn that it is the chipset that makes/breaks a computer. Atoms paired with 945s vomit upon a whiff of HD 1080p -ask Asus eee B202s.

This is probably about Intel's ability to deliver.  Can't wait for a reduction in the RMA conga line, huh?  Understood.  I got ya.

Won't touch Atom until Intel pairs it with something decent. May have to wait for MOOREstown. Get it? Dennis Moorestown? Bwhahahah...ha..ha..

Yeah OK. So that wasn't funny.

Thanks J.  That article confirms my suspicions, eg:

"The new OQO handheld will include Atom Z-series processors built for mobile Internet devices"
"Kedia said the OQO device at IDF implies availability on a certain date"
"You will find them move from Via to Atom over the foreseeable future,"
"OQO's CEO Dennis Moore dodged the rumor," (my emphasis)

This statement doesn't make sense.

If you want to see the video of the OQO at the IDF, here's the link:

http://www.intel.com/pressroom/kits/events/idffall_2008/video.htm

Day 2 Keynotes: Wednesday, August 20, 2008
Ultra Mobility: MIDs - Platforms for Innovation
Anand Chandrasekher

The OQO stuff starts at 18:55, they show WOW and a 1080p video running.

I see it as making sense due to OQO's small size. To put designers on a project is to take them off other possible alternative projects. Plus, while dropping a Nano into the existing pin compatible motherboard might be trivial, putting in a new motherboard and getting it to fit in the case and work with the rest of the existing hardware (such as the active digitizer which the Atom has not yet used in any other prototype I have seen) would seem to require some effort; effort which isn't going toward developing a different OQO3 prototype.

I have heard three unsubstantiated reasons for the announcement that this is a non-announcement, all of which make sense. First, OQO might not want to announce officially until the Atom production stream is up and running due to the problems they had getting the OQO 02 shipped after its initial announcement. Second, OQO might be looking to change other parts of the chassis as part of the OQO3 (including, possibly, any of the additions we've talked to death on this board or just a change to the exterior. Third, OQO might be waiting for the dual core Atom in order to offer an exponential rather than incremental change to the processor power.

In any case, I'm saving up.

My comment had nothing to do with whether this is real or not.

What doesn't make sense is how an OQO at IDF somehow implies there will be availability on a certain particular date.

I'm sorry, you're right, the phrase doesn't make sense.

I haven't heard the presentation but, given that the only direct quote from the presenter is below, I suspect that he is not entirely comfortable in English.

"You will find them move from Via to Atom over the foreseeable future," Kedia said.

In reading the article again, the phrase that jumped out at me was "The win means Intel could take a major customer away from rival Via." OQO, a major customer? Perhaps we are underestimating their success.

The things we argue about. At any rate, saw the video on the intel page. Wow running was cool but already possible. The 1080p video was very nice.

An Atom at 1.8mhz might be a real contender.

I'm looking forward to any future announcements.

Was hoping for the Via NANO though. Of course I am trusting that OQO is going to pick the best one. Then again Intel could be sweetening the pot a little. Meh, as long as the device is capable I'm happy.

Chandrasekher states in the presentation that what he was showing was a "production device not a demo unit, not pre-production silicant."

Seems like an imminent thing to me!

I guess I better sell m y back up and start to prepare for the next generation!
