I want to downgrade from Vista Business to XP.

So my understanding is that i take any old copy of XP pro and instal it.  then i run windows update.  it will ask me for my serial and i chose activate by phone.  then i call Microsoft India  (where there phone center is) give them the Vista business license # and they will give m an XP license.

Is that correct?  And i assume i get all the OQO drivers for XP from OQO's website.

Has anyone done this.  Vista is just too bogged down ith just 1 gig.

Hi Brad,

Have you tried contacting OQO to see if they can supply you with an XP disc? If I remember correctly, they were offering a downgrade option for a while and may still do so. Otherwise as long as you have a valid serial number that isn't being used on another computer then you will be able to use it and then all you will need to do is download the Windows XP drivers from the drivers section on the OQO Support website and run Windows Update.

Hope this helps.

I have kept Vista, shrunk the partition and installed XPpro on a 2nd partition. I can dual boot now. Search the forum for instructions.

You can buy a XP recovery disk from OQO (downgrade option) for $19. I don't know what the shipping is on that though (hopefully free but I haven't gotten past just looking in to it.

Brad,

You can purchase a downgrade CD in the OQO store: www.oqo.com/store by simply entering your units serial number. As well, we are offering free shipping this month.

Hope that helps!

HI Jim, any installation media (upgrade/downgrade) options for international customers? As you know, we can't even get to www.oqo.com/store without doing some proxy black-magic. I'm fine with paying for shipping  Smiley Cheers.

Technically speaking, I don't see why not, especially if your XP license was purchased for that purpose. I suppose that's why OQO provides all the necessary drivers from their website. I did something similar installing Vista on top of my XP OQO.

Jim, you can ignore my question above. I managed to get into the US store website and see that it's only for Vista downgrades and re-purchase of installation DVDs .

The beauty of the XP tablet edition disk from OQO is that it's got the pen/ink part that normal XP doesn't have. If you're not using a Penabled pen, that's not a problem but something to keep in mind.

i was told that you can use an invalid license # from xp. then when run windows update it will ask for a serial #.  then you call and validate the serial by phone and tell the operator you are downgrading from vista.

is this correct?

In order for the installation to continue you will be required to put in a valid serial number when it prompts you for one. If the serial number is in use by another computer then Windows might lock you out from logging into your system after you've run Windows Update and installed certain updates until you enter / purchase a valid serial number. It might be worth contacting Microsoft first to see what the procedure for downgrading is, but personally I'd go with the option that Jim from OQO has given you of purchasing the official OQO downgrade disc.
