but what's the big deal on battery power,...?  my toshiba portege doesn't get much more, if any, and is more than double the size and four times the weight,...

Compare the computing specs, not the physical size.  The size has nothing to do with battery life since the size does not use power.

Ah, while we are at specs:-)
Back in the good old 5mx days, two AA cells lasted one week heavy use. Maybe this would be an option for some. Cheap to get currently, and it is 32bit, multitasking, touchscreen, wireless (IR only, ok), cf slot, mic, speaker and a fantastic keyboard. Sounds like 24 hours is for beginners, isn't it?-)

Admittedly, battery breakthroughs are nice.  The key to success demands a wider view.  All components (processing units, memory, disk, network, software, etc) of the system should be considered to reach the 12-24hr battery life goal.  The folks at OQO are juggling many plates besides battery life.

People want performance, but are unwilling to sacrifice battery life.  Some want battery life, but are unwilling to sacrifice performance.  Smartphones are the only pocketable devices that can achieve 12-24hr requirements now.  They use Qualcomm or ARM chip designs, and operating systems that are not general purpose like XP, Vista, OSX, etc.  These "compromises" (innovations???) are made to achieve sed battery life.

The good news it that heavy hitters like intel are hopping on the bandwagon piloted by the likes of Texas Instruments, ARM, etc.  That means other slow-to-turn organizations like Microsoft, Apple, etc will oblige.  The birth of netbooks is sign-of-the-times.

The bad news is that Model XX's were supposed to hold that endearing spot in the hearts and minds of consumers.  However, he products are still relegated to niche solutions.  Moore said as much and stayed on message thru his tenure.

I get continuous usage by having 2 batteries one is powering the OQO the other is on charge in my car (Oqo auto/airplane charger) the only thing is having to shut down and swap batteries when I get the save and change pop up. hot swap would be nice.

Then the other thing is that when I am at rest I'm never too far from a power outlet for my spare ac adapter I mean I'm never far from one of my many favorite seats Grin which have an ac socket close im still the envy of those that matter. They call me "mr gadget". Don't tell me thats not one reason you bought it. you arrive you dazle with the size and ok speed and power then after an hour or so you plug in like everyone else, see why you need to find the chair beside the outlet.  Grin ok so the most comfy chair near an outlet. starbucks can be fun

And you Knooow you'll buy the super duper long life battery we all know the good folk at OQO are working hard at developing.

6.5hour battery life in wibrain umpc.

http://www.slashgear.com/wibrain-i1-umpc-65hr-battery-life-plus-3g-in-just-500g-0621699/

Seeing this, future processors, windows 7, OQO innovations, in next model 8 hours of battery life could be not a dream. Wink

A very interesting new for dreaming 24h or more battery life in OQO:

http://tech.yahoo.com/news/pcworld/20081129/tc_pcworld/jepsenworkstoraiselaptopbatterylifeto2040hours

They hope put this technology in Q2 2009, and talk about e-readers (also UMPC¿?) and netbooks.

From my stand point, performance in terms of raw processing (to include graphical) power is way more important to me than how long the battery last. I think what we have now is more than adequate as far as battery life goes.

While I can see why some put a huge emphasize on the life of the device on one charge, I think it's probably the least important on my list. I sincerely hope that OQO's next iteration of the OQO, does not use battery life as a major selling point while skipping out on cpu/vid card might.

I agree with you, 2disbetter, i prefer performance to battery life, but what we can hope for next wave devices in battery life?

I hope OQO 03 can reach the 8-12 hours of battery life at least.

See this interesting new of how OQO can obtain this:
