Using OQO as a wifi router to relay WWAN to another device
«

(I am sure this has been covered before, but tried searching many ways to find it, and coming up empty)
I recall at one point people were talking about how the wireless manager disables Wifi when WWAN is connected, and vice versa, so using the device as a wifi router for other laptops and devices to connect using the WWAN connection was very difficult. I also remember that someone figured out how to keep them both on, but can't find that info anywhere. Can someone point me in the right direction? TIA

I think if you are looking for a portable router this is the hot trick. It is small and creates a mobile wifi anywhere you want.

Thanks Primaz, but that's not quite what I had meant. The concept is that you install router software on the OQO so it acts as a wifi router to share it's Sprint EVDO connection with devices like my Macbook Pro.
The main roadblock I recall is that wifi is not enabled by default when EVDO was connected. Is this still the case, has anyone tried this?

You have to enable both radios (wifi and wwan) and then log into Verizon or Sprint and then set up an ad hoc network on your OQO. Other computers can then connect to your ad hoc network and voila your online.

Hey Dhaupert,
Not all 02s allow WWAN and WiFi to be connected simultaneously. From my understanding this is a hardware issue on these machines. Have you tried to see if your machine will allow both to be connected at the same time? If it does, then it should be as simple as following the instructions that trf posted. If not, then you probably have one of the machines that will allow only the one connection at a time.

I followed your instructions and was able to get online with my phone! thanks!

some weird insight to enabling wifi and wwan

When i got my machine i was not able to enable Wifi and Wwan at the same time.
My machine then broke. they replaced the keyboard and sprint wwan card and wifi. i still have no idea why the replaced the wwan and wifi.
when i got it back surprisingly i could enable both wwan and wifi at the same time.
then my motherbord blew out 2 weeks ago and had to send it back again. now when i got it back i can no longer enable wifi and wwan at the same time

I'd say that they probably replaced your motherboard the first time round with a newer motherboard that allowed both radios to be connected at the one time. Then when that one failed they probably replaced it with another that didn't allow simultaneous connections.

Since my HSPA e2 has just died i am back to using my old 02 which doesn't have wwan access. I have therefore set up my windows mobile phone as a wifi router to connect using cellular broadband. The application is WMWIFIRouter found at
www.wmwifirouter.com
this is a great little tool and only cost about 20 euros.

Why don't you use Bluetooth to the WM phone?

Reasons to use wifi rather than BT:
1) range
2) throughput
3) compatibility - many simultanious connections from various devices (when dont have BT)
4) so i can use my ASUS WL-330ge to exdend the range further.
5) port mapping (although i cant figure out how to support DDNS)
6) because i can

Bluetooth isn't as fast as WLAN, but for most US cellular users it's still faster than what you get from the cellular network.

I used bluetooth tethered to my treo for a couple of years before switching to wwan and there is no comparison. Wwan is much faster.
