I've made a usb start up disk using the following versions but have only gotten these problems:

Ubuntu 7.04 - Goes thru a HUGE list of disk errors (disk is fine, checked with ubuntu 9.10)
ubuntu 8.10- seems to work (splash screen etc) until it gets to actual installer.., probably not able to display correctly
Ubuntu 9.10- same as above

xubuntu versions are the same results (not that they would be different).

How are you guys getting it installed?

I just got Ubuntu 9.10 installed.

resolution is too tall:  800X600

800X600 is the only option under xrandr.

I've also tried to scale it.  Which didn't work, just makes it too big for the screen.  Doesn't interpolate it. i thought the oqo video did 1000X600(something like this) interpolated..

Are you using the vesa graphics driver instead of siliconmotion?  I can't imagine the vesa graphics driver knows about 800x480
