So what's the best utility for managing CPU speeds on an OQO?

Well if you have Vista, throttling is a built in feature. XP you need software. NHC appears to work pretty well. I just tried it again, and it reports CPU and HDD temps, plus allows you to use it in the place of the ACPI of the OS. I didn't find it necessary. I have my OQO throttled back to 85% and at 100% load it's at 1.34ghz. So far my temps stay around 48-64C (which I think are more than ok). I think at this rate my 02 should run indefinitely. (Speculation of course)

Ps: I use Everest on my desktop. It's amazing, but I think it's way overkill for the 02, still if you want to know EVERYTHING (and I haven't really checked the extend of what NHC can do as all I care about is the CPU and HDD temps) and have it in a slick package (it has a widget app you can run in sidebar, etc.) you could check that out as well. It is not free however.

How do you throttle in Vista?  Thanks in advance.

How do you throttle in Vista?  Thanks in advance.

If you see the battery meter in your notification area, right click on it and select Power Options (you can also get to this through the Control Panel).

You can then either create your own plan or change one of the existing plans (I run a modified Balanced Plan myself). Click on the Change Plan Settings and on the next screen click on the Change Advanced Power Settings.

Expand the Processor Power Management line and then the Maximum Processor State line.

Here you can specify a percentage of maximum at which the processor will run on batteries and when plugged in. I run mine at 60% on batteries (960MHz) and 80% when plugged in (1.28GHz). It is, admittedly, slow at these settings but you normally only notice this when opening programs. Then again, I don't do a great deal of processor intensive work on my OQO - mainly just notetaking, word processing, and browsing.

Ha!  I've never scrolled down and didn't see the processor settings.

Thanks!

The procedure is the same in Windows 7.

But when I drop the CPU speed, and check with CPU-Z, something odd happens. The multiplier and frequency keep moving around...400mhz x 4 multiplier, then 200mhz x 8 multiplier and it keeps switching around. But whatever combination it picks, always ends up being 1600.

So in other words, I don't see the frequency dropping down. I guess it could be an incompatibility with Win7, but it seems unlikely.

Anyone else using Win7 notice this? I'll try Everest when I get home and check again....
