A couple weeks back I was riding in a car with my OQO (not driving) and we had an accident which cause the OQO to toss out of my hand. Thankfully no one was hurt but my OQO did suffer some minor damage. Basically the screen popped off. The video cable was still attached and the screen was not damaged other then some case chipping but still fully functional. The issue I have is the springs that did the open and close hold have disappeared. The flew off in the accident and we have not been able to find them. Does anyone know if some more like that could be found? And in conjunction an suggestions on how to install? Looks like it could be tricky. I hate to lose this thing again, I just bought a new battery for it. It's still usable in this state but the screen won't stay open without holding it, which makes typing a bit hard.

This is roughly what the spring looks like.

If you do manage to find them then it takes a lot of patience but it is possible to put them back in.  I know from first hand experience.

I dropped my OQO from about a height of 1 meter and the screen came off.  I was on a remote site so I had to just use what I had access to.  In the end I could only get one spring back it.  For the most part it worked fine !

There are a couple of different types of springs used.  The antenna covers had a couple of screen revisions.  You must also take care to protect the small metal tabs beneath the antenna covers.  Breaking them can cause your wifi or wwan to not function properly.  Where are you located?

Thanks for some ideas. I'm located in Northwest Washington. I'll have to stop by the hardware store and see if I can wrangle up anything. I'll post as to my success. Any other tips from anyone is appreciated. Thanks.

I believe the best matching springs that you could find locally are the ones on the mouse trap. Try to locate the smallest one possible. One mouse trap should be enough for both sides. You simply cut & bend the ends. I will take a picture of what the exact OQO 02 springs look like for you. Smiley

I think u will be really lucky to find a spring to fit - they are also a lot of fun to install - there is a knack Smiley

You might want to try something to add friction to the screen - maybe get some stick on velcro tape and user the soft side (not the hard plastic loops) and stick some to the back of the screen.

Might work...

I would not attempt to use alternate springs.  You could damage your screen and the springs used on the oqo are very unique.  You might try to email Picasso.

I shot an e-mail too him but no reply. Probably a busy man. I'll keep playing around with this and see what I come up with. First I need to find me a small enough torx bit so I can remove the clamps. The thing popped out once but I'm afraid i'll break it if I try again.

There is a total of two springs. How many did you lose?

If you are in the UK I'll do that repair for free - I've got loads of springs.

I lost both of them. I had found one but on the trip home it got lost again and I have yet to find it.

Trev - I'm in the US unfortunately. I think technically I have the skills needed to do this. I've tore down and rebuilt laptops and such before. Just don't have the parts. If you would ever be willing to mail me springs I would be willing to paypal some fund for shipping and your trouble. let me know if your interested johnnyconfidence at gmail.com

No problem.

Email me your name and address and I'll post a couple to you.

Postage probably won't be more than a couple of $ so no need to send me any money.

My pleasure - seems a shame not to be able to use an OQO just for the sake of a couple of springs.

On their way to you now.
