But I *like* computers better when they have keyboards.  Sad

If it had an active digitizer, I'd think about it but with a touch screen and no keyboard I'm not interested.

I would really suggest that you try it out before you buy it. Given the size, it may be too big to type with your thumbs and too awkward to hold in one hand and type with the other. Plus I've read a number of reviews of other larger and smaller touch screens that express disappointment in the on screen keyboards available.

I don't know from the picture in the link what the on screen keyboard looks like, but if you do go ahead, and the on screen keyboard doesn't work as well as you would like, I would look into Microsoft's DialKeys which is an on screen keyboard that sits in the corners of the screen, designed to be used with the thumbs while holding the tablet in both hands.

If only it was/had...

- Half the weight (400 g or less) and pocketable.
- Built-in video-out port (not just using a bulky Dock) for PowerPoint presentations.
- Mac OS X inside for the best OS around.

Meanwhile, waiting for the Apple Tablet later this year or at CES 2010.

No, it will never succeed.  It must be a clamshell design like the hp jordnada or psion.  Touch typing is an absolute necessity for this market.  ;^)

Nice device, but IMO nothing beats my OQO.  They need to make one with a 5" display and keyboard.  I get the feeling that the UMPC market is going to be extinct since the introduction of the low priced netbooks and PDA cell phones that can do about anything.

Just for fun, I bought a Dell Mini 9 and installed OS X on it http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/mac-os-x-guides/6452-how-load-os-x-directly-onto-runcore-mac.html (upgraded the hard drive to a 32gb Runcore SSD, upgraded the RAM to 2gb and it really flies.

It's no OQO, but it's solid and for under $500 (yes, I bought a retail license for OS X), it's nice to have my own mini-Mac.  They keyboard is cramped and some of the key placements are odd (the apostrophe is below the question mark key - strange!  Overall if you're just surfing the net, or doing email, it's a fine netbook.  I haven't bothered installing any programs on it but may add iPhoto.  I just couldn't see typing anything extended on this.  It does have bluetooth so I could use a BT keyboard but if I would be doing that, I'd rather have my OQO.

Also, with a touch type keyboard and clamshell design, I can't walk around with it and type like I can on the OQO.  It really requires you to be stationary.  I've used the OQO in airports while waiting for a flight, at the store, nearly anywhere, but the Mini will most likely just be a toy that I keep at home for me or for my kids to use.

Just my 2 cents.

It's really perfect because I don't have to worry if it gets dropped or whatever (although my kids are old enough to know better and they're careful too).  I really don't allow them to touch the OQO!

I wish mine were. The first laptop I got for them was a used ThinkPad. It lasted about a year before someone left it on the floor and someone stepped on it. They've finally stopped leaving their replacement on the floor but they still tend to set their it down on the sofa while it's running. That would be the laptop with the air vent on the bottom. Maybe fanless is what they need. It's easier to purchase than common sense.

You can get a Dell mini 9 from the Dell outlet for as cheap as $269.  They're cute and sturdy.

Or cough up $350 for the Disney Netpal Netbook with spill-proof keyboard that comes in either 'Princess Pink' or 'Magic Blue'! (magic fairy dust optional)

Netbooks at Toys R Us... Didn't see that one coming. Smiley

I clicked around the product page at UMPC Portal ( http://www.umpcportal.com/products/ ) and as far as I can see, there are only two available devices that come close to an OQO replacement with three other possibilities expected or launched but not available (not including the OQO 2+ which shows up as an OEM device if someone wanted to put it into production). My criteria were:

At least a 1GHz Atom processor
Some form of Windows as an option
Frame diagonal of no more than 8 inches

The two available were the Viliv S5 (no keyboard, though) and the UMID M1 (only 512GB of RAM).

The future offerings were the LG XNote B831 (very interesting but nobody seems to know how fast the processor is), the Digifriends MID (no keyboard and an awful name), and the Lluon Mobbit (no keyboard and an even worse name but a nice flash presentation on their site . . . in Korean).
